I’m the founder, and now manager of Going Carbon Neutral Stirling (GCNS), based within Scottish environmental education charity Keep Scotland Beautiful. I’d describe myself as having a historical background of thriftiness with natural resources, but never as an environmentalist. I learnt about climate change, by accident, in 2004, instantly gave up my career in business growth and marketing to turn my full attention onto how to effectively communicate climate change to the Scottish masses - in a way that would lead to meaningful and sustained change. With 2 small boys at the time, I was kinda worried!! No money then for this kind of stuff, so I worked initially 3 years as a fulltime volunteer on climate change, eventually pulling together the GCNS engagement model, now an exemplar of the Scottish Government, which aims to engage 35,000 people in Stirlingshire, via communities, businesses and public bodies into making meaningful carbon reduction a social norm. Working with a team of 8 for 4 years, the project is currently on track to achieve its aim…sustaining engagement is my key concern, and reducing the consumption of the affluent a key challenge. Our website - horrendously basic just now, but due to be stunning in Oct 09, will take you through the logic behind our model.
